The Second Setup
in the Office There was still a need for music in the office, both for previewing records and for background music while working on the computer. The original plan after the forced re-furnishing was to reactivate my old Mordaunt Short speakers from the basement. To that end, I first bought an Eversolo Play CD player. Unfortunately, I then discovered that the old speakers were moldy due to their long storage in various basements over the past 25 years. I disposed of them and bought a pair of Wharfdale bookshelf speakers from my dealer. I already had the matching stands left over from my DJ setup. After a few weeks, I also wanted to use my turntable, a Lenco L75 from 1973, which I've owned since then. Unfortunately, the result was completely unacceptable. Partly because the stylus had probably reached the end of its lifespan, and partly because the Eversolo and Wharfdale setup didn't really impress me.

A dear friend saw things differently and promptly bought the Wharfdale speakers from me.
What now? I decided to listen to some other speakers – but found that the Eversolo Play didn't have enough power (for my taste). So I decided to buy active speakers again.
I went with Focal Alpha speakers again, this time the Alpha 80 Evo model, for which I also got new stands from ZAOR, the Croce 42 Black model, which are a perfect match for the Focals.
I was able to trade in the Eversolo Play at my dealer for an Eversolo A8 Streaming DAC. I also bought a Goldnote PH-5 phono preamp for the Lenco L75 turntable, which was undergoing a service in the meantime.

During the service, the cables were optimized, the mechanics were checked, a new headshell with a new cartridge was installed, and new tonearm bearings were fitted. The cartridge is an Audio-Technica VM740ML.

The Eversolo A8 is a sonically fantastic streamer/DAC with many features and a user-friendly app. I use the A8 with my Roon setup, which allows me to control the volume of my active speakers. Everything is a real joy again now, at least that was my initial impression after listening to a few old records.
